Really Chanel?

The first 4 pages in this months Vogue were the advertising campaign for Chanel's Pre-Fall collection.

Model: Alejandra Alonsa
Photographer: Karl Largerfeld

Despite often being quite simple, Chanel's adverts are usually stunning and really sophisticated. Yet I was really disappointed with these ones. Don't get me wrong the images themselves are beautiful, as are the clothes the model is wearing. It's the post production which lets it down. The faded white border just makes the images look cheap and inexperienced. Personally if they had left the images alone, with maybe a slightly darker background the image would have been much stronger.

This isn't the first time I've felt Chanel have disappointed. When I was in New York in January, Chanel's visual merchandising lacked any effort.

Chanel window displays in Midtown, Manhattan

It wasn't just Midtown which was a disappointment, but almost every Chanel store across New York. I get that the brand is all about simplicity, but these just look like the VM team just haven't put any effort in. The mannequins were very basic looking, some even in clothes that didn't really match properly, and it just looked like no time had been spent on the window displays. You would think with the amount of money behind the brand, they would be able to produce some spectacular VM displays.

What do you think? Am I right or am I just being a bit harsh?

Enjoy xx

  1. i agree with you. i LOVE Chanel's advertisements, usually. these ones are boring, and the border is just ugly.
Maybe they feel they don't even need to put any effort in anymore because they're Chanel? Quite sad. xx

  2. Yeh same, the adverts are usually stunning, but these are a bit dissapointing. You'd think with the amount of money Chanel has they could afford to do something much better!? xx
